چکیده

Ann Saudi Med 28(1) January-February 2008 www.kfshrc.edu.sa/annals 48 Pancytopenia is a serious hematological disorder that, apart from primary marrow failure, may be secondary to several other conditions. These include infection, radiation, drugs (especially cytotoxic drugs), and certain metabolic diseases.1 Among the latter, the association between hyperthyroidism and pancytopenia is reported least commonly.2 The pathog genesis of such an association is not clearly understood, though hypotheses of immunogenic and toxic mechag nisms have been advocated.3 The response of pancytog penia to treatment of hyperthyroidism confirms the cag sual relationship and may preclude any other treatment modalities of pancytopenia.

Pancytopenia in a Patient with Grave's Disease.

Pancytopenia can rarely complicate Grave's disease. It can be due to uncontrolled thyrotoxicosis or as a result of rare side effect of antithyroid medication. Pernicious anemia leading to Vitamin B12 deficiency is another rare associated cause. We report a case of a patient with Grave's disease and undiagnosed pernicious anemia whom was assumed to have antithyroid drug induced pancytopenia. Fai...
